About the show
Alma is at a real low point. Her boyfriend has recently left her, and both of her cousins are already tired of talking about it. On top of that, it seems like her new apartment is haunted. Moving out isn’t an option, because she would lose her deposit. One cousin suggests that Alma try psychotherapy. Probably a sensible idea, but it sounds too long, too expensive, and too depressing. The other suggests calling a medium from a TV show. Alma doesn’t really believe in such things, yet she agrees anyway.
Thus begin her wanderings through the world of contemporary witchcraft, leading her to gatherings of women-goddesses, arguments with tarot cards, and looking through the tangled branches of her family tree. Somewhere along the way, however, a gateway opens that allows Alma to glimpse other eras and meet her counterparts — women who, each driven by different reasons, are also taking their first steps into magic.
The performance is based on Daina Tabūna’s novel “Witches” (2023), which was nominated for the European Union Prize for Literature and the Latvian Annual Literature Award.
