About the show
The musical theater production "Alfas" is inspired by events that took place in Jēkabpils in January 2011, when four police officers and one civilian carried out an armed robbery in a casino, followed by a chase and a shootout during their apprehension near the Daugava River. The consequences were tragic—while fulfilling his duty and attempting to arrest the robbers, a police officer was killed. This incident coincided with the lowest point of the financial crisis and served as a harsh reminder of the values of the "fat years," namely bravado and the public celebration of an expensive, flashy, and loan-driven lifestyle. Although these events occurred over 10 years ago, they still raise relevant questions - How do we as a society understand the words determination, strength, masculinity, and heroism?
By reevaluating and fictionalizing these events in a dramatic musical form, it is possible to create a version in which individual personalities, self-confidence, carelessness, and the state of the country got tangled in one point and led to a tragedy. This production offers an opportunity to reflect on the role of men in society. How do they see themselves? What is expected of them? How can we think about all this and find ourselves at a dead end?
